‘Congo’s economy to grow by more than 5% this year’

The Congolese president, Denis Sassou N’Guesso, on Monday said in Brazzaville that his country’s economy was expected to grow by more than 5% this year.

“At the end of this year, if the data recorded in the first quarter is anything to go by, the Congolese economy would record growth higher than 5%,” he said in a message read before the two Chambers of Parliament.

“International financial institutions (International Montary Fund and the World Bank), generally very critical in their assessment of national economies, have said they are pleased about the good progress of the Congolese economy and have urged the country’s authorities to continue the sustainable efforts made to reform it,” Congolese president said.

Congo earns most of its income from oil, a sector that contributes more than 80% of the national budget and more than 70% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
