Death of man in Agareb: 26 organisations urge investigation

Tunisian organisations and associations have called for initiating an “urgent and transparent” investigation to determine the causes of the death of Abderrazek Lachheb in Agareb, governorate of Sfax.

In a joint statement signed by 26 civil society organisations and associations, the signatories of the statement called for unveiling the truth about “this heinous crime” and applying the law against those responsible and fighting impunity.

They denounced the use of violence and force by the police against the residents of Agareb who protested against the reopening of the landfill of El Gonna on Monday evening and the threats it posed to their health and their lives for decades.

The signatories of the statement also deplored the security treatment of structural and long-standing social issues that can be resolved only through effective and participatory public policies.

They strongly condemned the death of environmental activist Abderrazek Lacheb who, they said, died after inhaling the tear gas fired by police to disperse protesters.

The Ministry of Interior had denied the death of the young man in the protests that occurred in Agareb on Monday night.

It said in a statement the young man died following an illness at his home located 6 kilometers from the site of the demonstrations. He was taken to the local hospital by one of his relatives where he died, said a statement from the ministry.

Among the signatories of the statement: the National Union of Tunisian Journalists (SNJT), the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network (EMHRN), the Association of Tunisian Magistrates (AMT), the Tunisian Association of Democratic Women (ATFD), the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights (FTDES), the Organization Against Torture in Tunisia, Al Bawsala and the General Union of Students of Tunisia (UGET).
