Ghana population census to count 25 million people, five million houses

About 25 million people are projected to be counted in Gha na during the 5th Population and Housing Census to be conducted in March next ye a r, Dr Grace Bediako, Government Statistician, said on Thursday.

She said over five million houses would be counted during the census, which is e xpected to cost the country about US$48.9 million. Some 50,000 field workers wou l d be deployed during the census.

Dr Bediako was speaking when the Chinese embassy in Ghana donated 10 computers w ith accessories valued at about US$10,000 dollars to the Ghana Statistical Servi c e to help in the preparation for the census.

She said the census data would allow for informed policy information that would aid programme implementation and socio-economic developments.

Dr Bediako said for diverse operations to be carried out in the right sequence a nd in a timely manner, the Ghana Statistical Service was making sure the entire p rocess was carefully planned using appropriate organizational and administrative procedures.

Mr Yu Wenzhe, Chinese Ambassador in Ghana, said the census was important in deve loping countries because it would be the basis for correct decision making by go v ernment in the interest of its citizens.
