IMF committed to addressing economic challenges in Egypt, says IMF Chief

International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director, Ms. Christine Lagarde, has said that the Fund is committed to addressing Egypt’s economic and financial challenges, an IMF statement said on Monday.

The statement, obtained by PANA in New York, said that Lagarde made the remarks at the weekend during the IMF headquarters in Washington DC, US, after she held discussions with an Egyptian delegation, led by the Governor of the Central Bank of Egypt, Hisham Ramez.

It quoted the IMF chief as saying: “the Egyptian authorities and IMF staff have made further progress in their discussions in Washington DC this weekend on issues relating to their economic challenges.

“The authorities are firmly committed to addressing Egypt’s economic and financial challenges with the objective of restoring sustained and socially-balanced growth and they are already taking encouraging actions in this direction.

“Work will continue with the objective of reaching agreement on an IMF Stand-By Arrangement to support the authorities’ national economic programme in the coming weeks.”

PANA recalled that last month in Cairo, a senior IMF official who visited the country, said the Fund would support the Egyptian government to address its economic and financial challenges to ensure growth and development in the North African country.
