Libya creates 11 new export processing zones

The Secretary of the Libyan General Board of Industrial zones, Ali Bakir, said on Thursday that 11 new export processing zones being cre a ted are in their completion phase.

Speaking in an interview with the Libyan paper Al-Jamahiriya, he said the countr y currently had five export processing zones, the biggest of which is the 1,460- h ectare Sidi Sayeh, situated some 45 km southeast of Tripoli.

Mr Bakir recalled that the strategic development plan of the country’s export pr ocessing zones provided for the creation of 40 export processing zones at the en d of 2010, but this is behind schedule due to several factors including acquisiti o n and registration of land.

Mr Bakir said there was great interest by company managers and investors to thes e export processing zones either to extend factories and existing industrial act i vities or create new ones.

He said his office would endeavour to provide plans and studies, basic infrastru cture, access to services and the conducive climate to create industrial zones.

Established in 2006, the mission of the Libyan general board of export processin g zones is to study, plan, create, manage and maintain export processing zones.
