‘Mauritius expects 1 million tourists in 2013’

The number of tourists expected in Mauritius this year is projected to hit one million, representing an increase of 3.6 percent over the 965,441 tourists who came visiting in 2012, according to Statistics Mauritius (SM).

It revealed here Wednesday that tourist arrivals for the first nine months of 2013 reached 694,443, an increase of 2.8 percent over the figure of 675,584 registered for the first nine months in 2012.

According to SM, arrivals from Europe decreased by 2.3 percent to 374,540 with a 6.3 percent fall in arrivals from France, the leading market.

Regarding the other major tourist-generating countries, the following performances were recorded in tourist arrivals: United Kingdom ( 14.9 percent), Germany ( 9.8 percent) and Italy (-25 percent).

It said arrivals from Africa increased by 2.9 percent to 195,213. Arrivals from La Réunion, the major market of the region, decreased by 0.7 percent and those from South Africa increased by 7 percent.

Tourist arrivals from the Asian market went up by 29 percent to reach 98,550, with India, the major generating country of the continent, registering a growth of 7.2 percent.

The performance of other Asian countries was as follows: United Arab Emirates ( 63.8 percent), China ( 97.1 percent), Malaysia ( 48.9 percent), Hong Kong ( 16.6 percent), Singapore ( 12.9 percent) and Japan ( 3.3 percent).

The SM also revealed that tourism receipts would be around US$ 1.4 billion for 2013 compared to the US$ 1.48 billion earned in 2012.

At the end of September 2013, there were 113 registered hotels of which 106 were in operation with a total room capacity of 11,866 and 24,085 bed-places
