Mauritius moves to harness wind power

Port-Louis, Mauritius (PANA) – Mauritian authorities have signed a contract with French company Vergnet to set up two windmills with a capacity of 275 KW on the Rodrigues Island.

The establishment of the mills will increase by 7% the energy from such sources by 2009 on the island, which is inhabited by 40,000 people and situated some 350 km in north-eastern Mauritius.

Currently, the Rodrigues island produces only 1% of its electricity need with three small windmills set up in 2003.

An earlier attempt to set up wind mills on the island in the 1980s faltered, as the technology then could not adapt to the climate changes in the region, according to Patrick Assirvaden, Chief Executive Officer of the state-owned Central Electricity Board (CEB) in charge of the power supply on the island.
