Mideast ‘an emerging aluminium hub’

Aluminium Bahrain (Alba), one of the largest aluminium smelters in the world, said it was confident about the region’s status as an emerging hub for aluminium production.

According to industry experts, the region was expected to grab nearly 14 per cent of the global share of aluminium production in the next four years.

‘We are confident that your presence here will prove to be of strategic value to your organisation as you pursue networking opportunities, look for new business developments, consider various investment possibilities, and also, examine innovative technologies and factors influencing the market,’ said Laurent Schmitt, Alba’s chief executive.

Schmitt was delivering the opening address at a gala dinner hosted by Alba to honour participants and delegates of the 14th International Arab Aluminium Conference & Exhibition (Arabal 2010) held at Sonesta St. George Hotel, Luxor, Egypt last week. An exhibition was also organised on the sidelines of the exhibition.

‘As the oldest smelter in the GCC and a regional pioneer in aluminium production, Alba is proud to be associated with this event that enables regional smelters to raise their profile on the international stage,” he remarked.

As one of the principal trade events for the aluminium industry in the Arab world, Arabal 2010 brought together aluminium producers, suppliers, consumers and research workers from around the world under one platform.

The goal was to discuss the challenges facing the industry, examine new trends and opportunities and provide avenues to explore business possibilities with potential trade partners.

Schmitt further underlined Alba’s on-going support to the work of the Gulf Aluminium Council as crucial in promoting greater opportunities for interaction with members of the industry not only in the region but also worldwide.

“The Gulf Aluminium Council’s creation provided smelters in the region to evolve a joint consensus in tackling challenges, in addressing common issues and concerns as well as in seizing the competitive advantage of being located in the resource rich Arabian Gulf.”
