Nabi: “We are disappointed with measures announced for agricultural season”

Mohamed Taher Nabi, president of the agriculture professional group within the CONECT organization, said that the group’s recent participation in a hearing before the parliamentary Agriculture Committee is part of a forward-looking approach aimed at diagnosing the real challenges facing agricultural value chains and developing new legislation to reform the sector.

Speaking to Express FM on Monday, May 25, 2026, Nabi said discussions mainly focused on four key sectors: field crops, red meat, dairy products and olive oil, due to their direct link to food security.

He stated that the red meat sector is facing a deep structural crisis, marked in particular by a sharp decline in the national herd due to increasing livestock theft and the absence of deterrent laws protecting farmers.

He also pointed to the closure of municipal slaughterhouses without the establishment of organized alternatives, which has led to the spread of uncontrolled slaughtering, particularly of female livestock, negatively affecting herd regeneration and causing a significant drop in the number of sheep available for Eid.

Nabi further highlighted the lack of organization and oversight in livestock markets, which pushes many breeders to avoid direct sales and rely instead on intermediaries, contributing to rising prices and an imbalance between producers and consumers.
