Nigeria: Aviation parastatals to be merged

Nigeria is to merge the nation’s three aviation parastatals into one agency, as recommended by a presidential panel set up to restructure and rationalise government parastatals, commissions and agencies.

The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NMA) are to be merged into a new body, to be known as the Federal Civil Aviation Authority (FCAA).

The respective enabling laws of the parastatals are to be amended accordingly to reflect the merger.

The government also agreed to sell off its shares in the Nigerian Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT), as recommended by the panel, while the functions of NIGCOMSAT that relates to space development will be reverted back to the National Space Development Agency.

The panel, headed by a former head of the nation’s civil service, Mr. Steve Orosanye, also recommended the merger of many other parastatals, with the government rejecting some and accepting others.
