Sub-regional workshop gets underway in Gambia

The Gambia is playing host to a five-day sub-regional workshop on fundamentals of ”macroeconomic analysis” which opened on Monday in the country’s second city of Serre Kunda.

According to official sources, the workshop, organised by the West African Institute for Financial and Economic Management (WAIFEM), has attracted participants from countries within the sub-region.

WAIFEM’s Director General, Professor Akpan H. Ekpo, was said to have addressed the opening session during which he disclosed the progress made by his institute in the area of training.

He reportedly stated that WAIFEM had carried out 431 courses; benefiting some 12,112 participants since the institute began operation in July 1996.

Professor Akpan was said to have touched on the mission of the institute which is geared towards developing on a sustainable basis, expertise in the fields of macroeconomic, debt and financial management among staff members of central banks and others.

He said WAIFEM is also mandated to carry out research and consultancy in macroeconomic policy management as well as in the promotion of best practices.
