Tunisia: budget deficit down 65% by end-September 2023

The budget deficit decreased by 65% to TND 1.320 billion in the first nine months of 2023, compared to TND 3.764 billion in the same period of 2022, according to the state budget execution document published by the Ministry of Finance.

This improvement is explained by the 9% increase in state revenues to TND 30.78 billion, due to the 9.5% increase in tax revenues to TND 28.37 billion and non-tax revenues of almost TND 2.1 billion.

On the other hand, budget expenditure grew slightly by 2.5% to TND 31.789 billion at the end of September 2023, due to the increase in financing expenditure (debt interest) by 25.8% to TND 4.06 billion and in compensation expenditure by 2.8% to TND 16.10 billion. Capital expenditure also increased to TND 2.98 billion.

According to the Ministry of Finance, cash resources decreased slightly to TND 10.215 billion at the end of September 2023, compared to TND 10.52 billion at the same period in 2022.
