Tunisia: commercial phosphate production by CPG down 25%

Commercial phosphate production by the Gafsa Phosphate Company (CPG) reached 2.6 million tons from January to September 2018, compared to 3.3 million tons in the same period last year, i.e. a 25% decrease.

This poor result is attributed to the almost-paralysis of the Company’s activity, from January 20 to March 2018, in all the production zones in Metlaoui, Redayef, Om Larayes and Mdhilla, by protests against the results of staffing competitions at the CPG.

This blockage was followed by other sporadic protests.

Communication officer of the CPG Ali Houchati said the objectives set by the company to reach 6 million tons, during the year 2018, have become difficult to achieve, especially that in nine months half of this volume has not reached.

Since 2011, average phosphate production has not exceeded 40% of the 2010 CPG production capacity of 8 million tons.
