Farmers’ debts to banks amount to 1,057 million dinars, 75% of which are owed to public-sector banks, Sofiene Bennour, Director General of Regulation and Macroprudential Supervision at the Central Bank of Tunisia, said during a study day organized by the Parliamentary Academy, according to Mosaique FM.
“Fifty-seven percent of farmers owe banks amounts not exceeding 10,000 dinars. However, the figures show that twelve farmers are each indebted by more than 50 million dinars,” he specified.
Bennour pointed out that measures have been taken over the past decade to address this issue, including the cancellation of debts below 3,000 dinars in 2015 and below 5,000 dinars in 2017, noting that 74,000 farmers benefited from these measures.
