Tunisia: food industries’ exports increase by 134.6%

Exports of the agribusiness sector reached 1,945.8 million Tunisian dinars (MTD) in the first five months of the current year, up 134.6% compared to the same period in 2014 when the figure had reached 829.5 MTD.

This was stated by Noureddine Agrebi, Director General of Food Industries at the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mining.

This increase is due to the record production of olive oil which has reached 300,000 tons this season, the official told Africanmanager.

The official added that the sector’s imports grew by 16.1%, from 1,518 MTD during the first 5 months of 2014 to 1,762.6 MTD until the end of May. The import-export ratio has evolved to reach 54.6%.

The food industry represents 3.7% of GDP and 16.5% of the total value of exports in Tunisia.
