Industrial production posted a 4.9% decline in January 2019 year-on-year, the National Institute of Statistics (INS) said in a statement Tuesday.
This decrease is explained by dropping production in the extracting sector (-13.4%) following the decline in production of crude oil and natural gas, the agrifood sector (-19.2%) as a result of lower olive oil production and the chemical industry sector (-18.4%) following the decline observed in the production of phosphate derivatives.
In contrast, industrial production recorded an increase in the non-energy product extraction sector (+35.5%), the manufacturing of other non-metallic mineral products (+ 4.3%), the mechanical and electrical industries (+ 1.5%), rubber and plastics (+ 9.6%) and oil refining (production shutdown of oil refining plant in January 2018), according to the same source.
