Tunisia: National electricity production up 3% by end of August 2025

National electricity production recorded a 3% increase by the end of August 2025, reaching 14,000 GWh (including renewable self-generation), compared to 13,529 GWh at the end of August 2024, according to the Energy Situation Report published by the National Energy and Mines Observatory.

Electricity production from renewable energy sources accounted for 6% of total output, the report added.

The Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (STEG) still holds the lion’s share of electricity production, representing 95% of national output as of the end of August 2025.

Moreover, around 350 MW of rooftop photovoltaic systems had been installed in the residential sector by the end of 2024. In addition, 323 authorizations were granted for a total capacity of 50 MW in the industrial, tertiary, and agricultural sectors connected to medium and high voltage networks.

Peak demand recorded a 1% decrease, standing at 4,837 MW at the end of August 2025,

compared to 4,888 MW in August 2024.

Electricity sales rose slightly by 1% between the end of July 2024 and the end of August 2025. Sales to high-voltage customers increased by 21%, while those to medium-voltage customers declined slightly by 1%.

Industrial consumers remained the largest users of electricity, accounting for 57% of the total demand from high- and medium-voltage clients by the end of August 2025.

Most sectors recorded higher sales, particularly: paper and publishing industries (+9%),

building materials industry (+4%) and extractive industries (+8%).

By contrast, some sectors saw a drop in sales: agricultural water pumping (-8%), textile and clothing industries (-3%) and basic metal industries (-1%).
