Tunisia: Phosphate exports rise 15% amid mining sector repositioning efforts

Tunisian exports of phosphates and their derivatives recorded a significant 15% increase in 2025, compared to a 26.3% decline in 2024, which had affected the country’s financial and trade balances, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

This improvement reflects government efforts to reposition the mining sector as a strategic growth driver, particularly in light of the need to reduce the trade deficit and strengthen foreign currency revenues.

In 2010, the mining sector accounted for 4% of GDP and 9% of the country’s exports. Phosphate production reached a record level of 8 million tons in 2010 before stabilizing at 3.5 million tons over the past decade.

In response, the government has adopted an ambitious plan aiming to achieve 14 million tons of production by 2030.

This plan focuses on improving production, transport, and infrastructure in the phosphate and derivatives sector.
