Tunisia: situation remains complicated for German companies (survey)

The AHK Tunisia has just published the results of its annual survey on the situation and prospects of German and Tunisian companies in Tunisia.

This survey is also part of the AHK World Business Outlook survey conducted among member companies of German Chambers of Commerce abroad, delegations and AHK representative offices.

Nearly 200 German companies, branches and subsidiaries as well as companies with close ties to Germany participated in the survey for Tunisia in early October 2021.

Despite many challenges, a wind of optimism is blowing for this year-end. Indeed, a large proportion of the companies surveyed hope to gradually make up for the losses incurred last year and expect a cautious improvement in the economic situation in Tunisia.

More than half of the companies expect their own activities to develop better over the next twelve months.

Thus, 75% of member companies are maintaining their investment spending or even planning an increase.

The risks to business economic development remain multiple

However, despite this cautious upswing in optimism, the lack of visibility and the effects of the coronavirus pandemic continue to pose major challenges for businesses.

Uncertainty about economic policy conditions are the biggest risks for the companies surveyed.

Unfortunately, the majority of companies encounter various difficulties with the Tunisian public authorities.

In fact, more than half of the companies consider that relations with ministries, the administration, the Central Bank and customs remain difficult.

Assets to highlight

Tunisia benefits from multiple assets that could work to its advantage for an economic revival. More than 80% of the companies surveyed consider that geographical proximity with Europe represents a real opportunity to be seized along with the qualification of the staff.
