Tunisia: STEG to increase production capacity by June 2013

“Plans are currently underway to strengthen the production capacity of the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (STEG) by June 2013, through the two power production plants in Bir Mecharga (250 MW),” said Minister in charge of Economic Affairs Ridha Saidi.

The Minister held, on Wednesday in Tunis, a meeting to assess the situation of the electricity production in the country, before the summer season, in the presence of Minister of Industry Mehdi Jomaa, the Secretary of State for Agriculture, Habib Jomli and CEOs of STEG and SONEDE.

According to a statement issued by the Prime Ministry, several evaluation sessions were held about the crisis faced by SONEDE in the summer of 2012, when it was unable to provide drinking water to several internal areas due to power cuts.

To avoid such a situation, Mr. Saidi announced that the networks of STEG will be strengthened and maintenance operations will be launched in all generating stations, in addition to coordination with Algeria and Libya for a joint supply of electrical energy, in case of need.
