Tunisia: strong recovery of British tourism

According to figures from the Tunisian National Tourism Office (ONTT), the number of British tourists who visited Tunisia soared 53.8% in July this year compared to a year ago, while those from Ireland increased by 83.9% during the same period.

More than 180,000 visitors from Britain and Ireland have traveled to Tunisia so far under the year 2012, a dramatic turnaround after several years of unrest in the country.

This strong recovery is partly attributed to the new air services to Tunisia from Manchester Airport in the UK, as well as connecting flights easily available from Djerba.

Moreover, the 35th anniversary of movie “Star Wars,” offered an opportunity for the British to flock to Tunisia to see some of the locations of the film, in Tataouine.

“Tunisia has luxury hotels, thalassotherapy centers, world-class beaches and thousands of years of history,” said Wahida Jaiet, ONTT representative in the UK and Ireland.
