Tunisia: Treasury bills outstanding reach all-time high of 24 billion dinars in 2022

Treasury bills outstanding reached a historical high of 24 billion dinars, at the end of the past year, posting an increase of 3.8 billion dinars (+20%) compared to 2021, according to data from the Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT).

In detail, the treasury bills outstanding is composed of the (short term treasury bills outstanding) to the tune of 7.1 billion dinars (+122%), and the assimilated treasury bills (BTA) outstanding to 16.9 billion dinars (-0.6%).

This growth of the treasury bills outstanding reflects the strong pressure exerted in 2022 on the liquidity needed for the operation of the State in a context marked by the tightening of external debt.

A Treasury bill is a short- or medium-term debt security issued by the State, through the intermediary of the Treasury, in order to raise liquidity to finance its various actions.
