Tunisia: Tunisair sees 19.5% increase in passengers since beginning of 2023

The Tunisair has transported around 1 million and 700 thousand passengers, since the beginning of 2023, up around 19.5% compared to the figures for the same period last year.

Speaking on Wednesday at a hearing of the Tourism Committee of the Assembly of the People’s Representatives (ARP), Tunisair’s CEO, Khaled Chilli, said the national carrier had scheduled almost 14,283 flights, which will provide around 2 million and 244,000 seats, an increase of around 330,000 seats (+17% compared to 2022).

During this hearing, which was devoted to examining the revenue situation of the tourism sector in Tunisia, the official pointed out that these indicators reflect a recovery in the air transport sector after the crisis experienced during the COVID-19 period.

He noted that the national carrier needs a specific legal arsenal, especially since decisions on its restructuring have been blocked since 2017.

In addition, he said, the airline, which has limited financial resources, needs to rejuvenate its fleet of aircraft, the purchase and maintenance costs of which are constantly increasing.

It should be remembered that on 25 August 2023, the national airline had received the last aircraft in a fleet development program under a lease contract for 5 aircraft.
