Tunisia’s affluent spend 11,767 TND per year on consumption

The average expenditure at current prices per person and per year stood at 5,468 dinars in 2021, compared to 3,871 dinars in 2015, up 41.3% over the whole period 2015-2021, the National Survey on Household Budget, Consumption and Living Standards in 2021, published last week by the National Institute of Statistics (INS), showed.

This increase corresponds to an average annual growth of 5.9%. At constant prices (prices in real terms, i.e. corrected for price changes relative to a base or reference date), expenditure is virtually stagnant over the period 2015-2021.

Average expenditure per person per year varies considerably across the statistical distribution of expenditure. For example, the 20% most affluent households spent an average of 11,767 dinars per capita on consumer purchases in 2021, compared to 2,014 dinars per person per year for households in the top quintile (bottom 20%), i.e. a ratio of about 1 to 6.
