The grain harvest in Tunisia for the 2012-2013 season is estimated at 13.6 million quintals over an area of 1.13 million hectares, according to initial estimates.
This figure is lower than the results of the previous season amounting to 22.5 million quintals, which corresponds to a decline of 35%.
Samia Saidane, executive director of agricultural production, said that the low rainfall had a strong impact on production which is now difficult especially at the center of Tunisia, compared to previous seasons. Production was affected by the reduction in planted area, which fell from 1.50 million ha in 2012 to 1.13 ha in 2013
Conditions are certainly daunting, but stakeholders are optimistic for this season.
