E-sports: Tunisia aims to become a major player in digital economy

Tunisia is making its mark on the rapidly growing African video game and e-sports market. The National Committee for Game Development (CNDD) is leading efforts to professionalize the sector and position Tunisia as a key player in the digital economy.

Created under the umbrella of the Tunisian E-sports Federation (TunESF), the CNDD’s mission is to develop Tunisia’s video game industry and support emerging studios.

TunESF stated that the CNDD aims to integrate video games into Tunisia’s digital economy, adding: “The CNDD works to professionalize the Tunisian video game sector and strengthen its role in the national digital economy.”

The CNDD brings together developers, entrepreneurs, mentors, policymakers, and tech organizations to build a more coordinated ecosystem conducive to investment.

“By bringing together developers, startups, educators, and policymakers, the committee aims to create a structured ecosystem ready to welcome investments for video game creation,” TunESF added.

Its activities cover talent development, innovation, infrastructure, and sector promotion, reflecting Tunisia’s ambition to expand beyond e-sports competitions toward broader video game industry growth, according to FEocus Africa.

Shaping the future of video games in Tunisia

The committee also organizes the annual CNGD summit, a gathering where developers, investors, educators, and policymakers exchange ideas, address sector challenges, and define Tunisia’s video game roadmap.

With a young, tech-savvy population, growing e-sports infrastructure, and a thriving indie game community, Tunisia aims to become a leading video game market in North Africa.

TunESF emphasizes that the committee’s work goes beyond tournaments. “Our mission is to support talent, promote collaboration, and ensure that video game development becomes a sustainable and strategic sector in Tunisia,” the federation said.

Although part of an e-sports federation, the committee is quietly building a broader video game sector. By connecting developers, educators, and policymakers, it is creating a more cohesive ecosystem, with Tunisia’s gaming scene expanding thanks to ongoing initiatives. The committee aims to extend its impact through 2026 and beyond.

Global market growth: $10.06 billion by 2033

The global e-sports market was valued at $2.08 billion in 2024. According to IMARC Group, it is expected to reach $10.06 billion by 2033, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 17.05% from 2025 to 2033. The Asia-Pacific region dominated the market with a 30% share in 2024.

Rising internet penetration, major innovations in gaming technology, growing popularity of live streaming platforms and significant investments from sponsors and advertisers are driving global e-sports market growth.

Additionally, Gen Z engagement and the emergence of international events like e-sports Olympics are accelerating adoption and legitimization of e-sports worldwide.

The e-sports industry is evolving rapidly, fueled by major trends. The rise of video games as mainstream entertainment has led to a surge in audience and participation. Streaming platforms like Twitch and YouTube Gaming, combined with social media interactions, have significantly boosted e-sports growth.

The increasing popularity of cloud gaming and mobile gaming has made e-sports more accessible, allowing both players and spectators to participate without high-end hardware.

These trends, along with wireless connectivity and 5G advancements, enhance gameplay quality and drive e-sports market growth.

The United States is at the forefront of this growth, thanks to massive investments in e-sports infrastructure and technology. In particular, the rollout of 5G networks is revolutionizing the organization and consumption of e-sports events.
