Food prices rise in Guinea-Bissau

The prices of foodstuffs have risen in Guinea-Bis sau since mid-August, the chairman of the Association of Consumers of Goods and S ervices (ACOBES), Bambo Sanha, has said.

The price of a bag of 50 kg of rice, the basic food in the country, increased fr om 12,000 to 14,000 FCFA, while that of the 50 kg of sugar increased from 15,000

to 27,000 FCFA, he said on Bissau on Monday.

Speaking to the press, ACOBES chairman said the prices of meat and fish have gon e up by 75%.

In one month, the price of one kilo of garlic has increased from 2,000 to 4,500 FCFA, as the commodity and onion have become rare on the market.

Mr Sanha said traders attribute the increases to the rise in custom duties and t axes on the sale of imported products.
