Mauritania govt issues quartz mining licence

The Mauritanian government has granted a mining licence to Mauritanian Mineral Company (MMC) to mine quartz in the region of Nouadhibou in north-west Mauritania.

A statement issued on Thursday after the government’s weekly cabinet meeting sai d the mining company had already undertaken exploration works that indicated the

a quartz deposit â?is economically exploitableâ?.

In the financial set up planned for the exploitation of the deposit, the governm ent would hold 10% of the shares in accordance with recent amendments of the min i ng code.

The mine is situated about 150kms from Nouadhibou port on the Western Sahara bor der.

MMC said there could up to some 70 million tonnes of quartz in the mine. Product ion is expected to be some 300,000 tonnes per annum of quartz gravel for electro – metallurgy from the 2,000 square kilometres open pit mine.
