Saied on margins of Brussels Summit: Africa belongs to Africans and stolen assets must be returned

President of the Republic Kaïs Saïed said on Thursday “Africa belongs to Africans” and the “stolen money and assets must be returned to peoples of the continent who suffer from difficult economic, social and political conditions.

The Head of State stressed, in a statement to TAP on the margins of his participation in the 6th European Union-African Union Summit, the need to build relations between the AU and the EU countries on the basis of new criteria based on equality, openness and transparency and on a reading emanating from people’s will to know the truth and achieve fair justice.

President Saied also questioned “the reasons for the concern of some states when it comes to truths”.

He added: “They dare to interfere in others’ affairs and speak of fair justice and independence of the judiciary, while they cover crimes and plundering of people’s assets.”

Kaïs Saïed also emphasised the need to address the real causes of the deteriorating conditions in Africa “and not to address the consequences under new names”. He regretted that the organisation of African unity was “a dream that has quickly dissipated.”

The 6th EU-AU Summit began on Thursday in Brussels and will continue on Friday, with the participation of about fifty Heads of State and Government from both continents.
