Sousse: tourist arrivals down 15.8%

Tourist arrivals recorded in areas of Sousse and El Kantaoui went down 15.8% during the period from January 1 to August 10, 2015, with a number of tourists estimated to 532,000 tourists against 632,000 in 2014, according to Soufiene Boughzala, Deputy regional commissioner of tourism in Sousse who said 80,000 British tourists have visited the area during that period.

In a statement given to African Manager, he added that the number of overnight stays reached 2.5 million at the end of the period from January 1 to August 10, 2015, against 3.5 million overnight stays in 2014, down 30.2%.

Also during the same period, the occupancy rate stood at 35.2% against 45.7% in 2014, a decrease of -12%.

39 tourists were killed in a terrorist attack that had targeted, Friday, June 26, 2015, a hotel located in the tourist area Al Kantaoui, Sousse Governorate.

Following this attack, nearly 2 million tourist nights were canceled while more than 200,000 tourists have given up coming to Tunisia.
