Tunisia: Appeal Court of Revolution martyrs is political verdict – FIDH

The International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) regretted, Monday, the appeal trial of those responsible of repression of “the January 14 Revolution which led to reducing of sentences and release of former chiefs of Ben Ali’s regime.”

For FIDH, this verdict pronounced by a military court and not a civil one, violates the international standards of human rights protection insofar as it has not respected the criminal chain of responsibility and the right to a fair trial.

FIDH calls on the judges of the military court of appeal to show diligence in holding the future audiences, to ensure that these trials are ruled at a reasonable date, in respect of the rights of defence and the right of the victims to obtain compensation for their damages.

It also calls on the military justice to make strict and faithful implementation of international law imposed in Tunisia, notably that of the responsibility of the superior for the crimes committed by his subordinates.
