Tunisia: current account deficit narrows to -2.2% of GDP until end May 2023

The current account deficit narrowed to -2.2% of GDP at the end of May 2023, compared with -4.6% a year earlier, according to data published by the Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT) on Friday.

This development was supported by the narrowing of the trade deficit (-8.1 billion dinars compared with -9.9 billion dinars at the end of May 2022), despite the widening of the energy deficit (-4.6 billion dinars, i.e. almost 58% of the total deficit), on the one hand, and the improvement in tourism receipts and workers’ remittances, on the other.

Tourism receipts rose by 57.7% in the first five months of 2023 compared with the same period in 2022, reaching 1.7 billion dinars.

The same applies to cumulative workers’ remittances, which increased by 6% to 3.1 billion dinars at the end of May 2023.
