The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology said Thursday it had allowed the company”” Emirates International Telecommunications (EIT), a strategic partner of “Tunisie Telecom” (TT), to start, upon its request, the process of selling its stake in the company.

“EIT” holds 35% stake in TT which it had bought in 2006 for $ 2.25 billion.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of ICT, the Tunisian government has demanded that the new shareholder be one of the international telecommunications operators, with expertise in this area to provide more value to “Tunisie Telecom “in services, technology and strategic choices.

Habib Debbabi, Advisor to ICT Minister, told TAP that “the UAE partner has not given the reasons behind its decision to sell its share in the capital of TT.”

However, he indicated that under “the agreement with the EIT, the Tunisian government has the right to choose the new partner and approve it before the completion of the sale transaction.”
