Tunisia: pistachio production down in Gafsa

The quantities of pistachios produced in the governorate of Gafsa are estimated, this season, at 1,200 tons, in reduction compared to last year when the harvest reached 1600 tons.

This decrease is linked to the impact of severe weather and heavy hail this year, said Abdessattar Ghabtan, head of crop production under the regional agricultural development commission in Gafsa.

The start of the pistachio harvest is expected from August, he said, recalling that the most productive delegations of pistachios are Gafsa North, South Gafsa, Om Lâarayes, Sidi Aïch and Sened.

The areas devoted to the cultivation of pistachios extend over about 16 thousand hectares in the governorate of Gafsa, of which 15% in irrigated and the rest in dry.
