Tunisia: tourist arrivals plunge 21.9%

Tunisia hosted 1,901,865 visitors from January 1 to June 20, 2015, down 21.9% over 2014, a fall clearly marked compared with 2010.

According to statistics released Tuesday by the Ministry of Tourism, this decline is due mainly to a free fall of European tourists by 45.2% between 2010 and 2015.

The decline in inflows was 23.5%, compared to the same period last year. “The image of Tunisia has become that of instability and insecurity for tourists, especially after last March 18 terrorist attack at the Bardo Museum, Houssem Ben Azouz, Chairman of the Tourism professional group at the CONECT (Confederation of Tunisian Citizen Enterprises).”This difficult situation will continue this year because the tourist season 2015 is already underway … We must mobilize more next year to regain tourists’ confidence.”

By nationalities, the fall has been very significant for French (-62.8%) with 210,776 visitors between 2010 and 2015. Their number fell by 24% between 2014 and 2015.
