UNDP, Delta State govt sign agreement on job creation

The UNDP will Monday sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Nigeria’s Delta State government for a three-year job creation and co n flict prevention initiative in the restive Niger Delta region.

In a statement in Abuja, Nigeria’s federal capital city, UNDP’s communications s pecialist, Maureen Ideozu, said the UNDP Resident Representative in Nigeria Dr. A lberic Kacou and the Delta State governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, will sign the d ocument.

The Niger Delta job creation and conflict prevention initiative is a follow-up t o the Niger Delta Human Development report jointly commissioned by UNDP and Shel l in 2006.

The report identified skills development and employment opportunities for the yo uth as key to reducing poverty and restiveness in the region.

Delta State is one of the three Niger Delta States partnering with UNDP under th e initiative.

The other two states are Bayelsa and Rivers. The MOU with Bayelsa State was sign ed in February.
