Zimbabwe’s PM votes, says he’ll win resoundly

Zimbabwean Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai cast his vote in the country’s 2013 general elections on Wednesday, calling the election a historic moment for everyone.

”I am winning resoundly,” he said after casting his vote at a hall in Mount Pleasant, a residential suburb in the northern part of Harare, the Zimbabwean capital.

The Premier arrived at the hall with his family at 10.30 am local time

Tsvangirai, who is contesting on the platform of the Movement for Democratic Change-T, is one of the four candidates challenging long-time President Robert Mugabe, who has presided over the southern African nation since it gained its independence from Britain in 1980.

Others are Welshman Ncube of the Movement for Democratic Change-N, Dumiso Dabengwa of the Zimbabwe African Peoples Union (ZAPU) and Kisnot Mukwazhi of the  Zimbabwe Democratic Party (ZDP).

The elections, at which lawmakers and local government councillors will also be elected, are the first to be held under a new Constitution that was approved in a referendum in March 2013.
