Ramadan: Frenzy notably less than in previous years

The buying frenzy among Tunisians has significantly decreased, according to Lotfi Riahi, Director of the Consumer Orientation Organization (OCG).

One reason for this decline, he explained on Express FM, is the availability of goods on the market, noting that food shortages in the past had previously triggered massive rushes.

Another factor is the stabilization of strategic stock levels, which had fluctuated in previous years, contributing to the lack of urgency among consumers.

Riahi also emphasized that consumers’ purchasing power has deteriorated to the point where they are focusing on essential products, often subsidized items, while avoiding luxury goods or non-essential purchases.

Regarding red meat, Riahi pointed out that the prices of imported quantities are more affordable for Tunisians compared to locally sourced meat, which remains out of reach for the average citizen’s budget.

Riahi stated, “Overall, prices are acceptable, but relative to per capita income, they remain high.”

As for the cost of Ramadan for an average-income family of four, it amounts to approximately 1,800 dinars, excluding the consumption of red meat and fish throughout the month.
