Tunisia: JICA supports three-year skills training program for medical engineers

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the Higher Institute of Medical Technology of Tunis (ISTMT), the University of Tunis el Manar (UTM) and the City of Sciences of Tunis (CST) signed on December 14, 2022 an agreement on a three-year training program within the framework of triangular cooperation, for French-speaking African countries.

The program aims to realize the spirit of TICAD 8, which took place in Tunis in August this year, by organizing training by Japan and Tunisia for African countries.  It includes 3 training sessions from 2023 to 2025, at a rate of one session per year.

The first will take place in June 2023 at ISTMT and will bring together 20 participants from the target countries.

This training has been designed to strengthen the knowledge and practical skills of high-level scientific trainers in the maintenance and quality control of medical equipment in African countries. These trainers will disseminate the acquired expertise to future medical technicians and engineers and to their peers.

The signing of this MOU is a continuation of JICA’s support to ISTMT, which was notably materialized during this year through the donation of medical and computer equipment to this institution within the framework of the “Human Resources Development Project in the Administration of Medical Equipment during COVID-19”.

The choice of ISTMT to conduct this training program with JICA is explained by the very important role that this institution plays in training qualified human resources in handling medical equipment for hospitals. This role is destined to become more and more important, especially as medical technology develops in the future.
