Tunisia: value of currency in circulation hits record high of 19 billion dinars

The value of currency in circulation has reached a historic record by exceeding for the first time the mark of 19 billion dinars.

Indeed, according to the daily data of the Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT), the amount of the currency in circulation stood at 19,037 million dinars, on January 30, 2023.

The value of the currency is therefore up 1.8 billion dinars (+10.4%) compared to the same date in 2022.

This sharp increase in the circulation of cash reflects a clear and growing preference of Tunisians and economic operators for the use of cash, despite the efforts made to improve and develop modern means of payment.

It should be noted that since 2011, currency in circulation has been growing annually faster than the nominal GDP, reflecting a change in the behavior of economic agents in terms of confidence and a clear preference for the use of cash.
