The commercial port of Zarzis, in the governorate of Medenine, is preparing to launch, for the first time, a container transport activity and to connect with the port of Rades (southern suburbs of Tunis), as well as with Italy and Libya, via a new maritime line.
According to data presented last week during a meeting of the Regional Advisory Committee on Investment, this project is expected to give a strong boost to the port and mark its entry into a new phase of maritime expansion and activity.
Initiated in response to the needs of businesses, this activity should support the creation of new projects and stimulate development in southern Tunisia.
It will allow certain companies to redirect their exports from the port of Rades to Zarzis, taking advantage of its significant assets, including large available land reserves and diversified port infrastructure.
Long demanded by exporters, containerized operations will address a major constraint linked to high land transport costs, previously imposed due to the lack of such services in Zarzis.
Industry professionals have repeatedly stressed the need to establish partnerships with specialized shipping companies to facilitate their establishment in the port.
