The European Union (EU) Thursday announced a 15-million-euro donation to member-states of the Indian Ocean Commission (COI) to enable them fund their projects on renewable energy and energy sustainability, the COI Secretary General, Jean-Claude de l’Estrac, disclosed.
The five-year programme is to be implemented by COI member-states — Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius and Seychelles.
Secretary-General de l’Estrac said the projects would help the member states have wider access to modern, efficacious, renewable and reliable energy sources, adding that the programme would aim to boost the development, investment and sustainable management of renewable energies in those areas.
Indian Ocean countries depend on hydro fuel energy although they have huge renewable energy potentials.
